Three ways to add a signature to a PDF

There are three standard methods for adding a signature to a PDF, each suited to different contexts. Drawing gives the most authentic look. Typing is fastest. Uploading your actual handwritten signature as an image provides the strongest personal identity link. PDFWix Sign PDF supports all three methods in one tool, free, in your browser.

    Method 1: Draw your signature

Drawing a signature digitally works best with a touchscreen device or a drawing tablet. On desktop, drawing with a mouse produces a shakier result — most people find typed signatures look cleaner on desktop. To draw: open PDFWix Sign PDF, upload your PDF, click Add Signature, select Draw, and sign with your mouse or finger. Tip: draw slowly and use your whole arm movement, not your wrist, for a more natural result.

    Method 2: Type your signature

Typing a signature uses a handwriting-style font to render your name as a signature. This is the fastest method and produces the cleanest result on desktop. In PDFWix Sign PDF, click Add Signature, select Type, type your name, and choose from several handwriting font styles. The typed result is visually equivalent to a drawn signature for legal purposes under the ESIGN Act.

Method 3: Upload a photo of your handwritten signature

For the most authentic-looking result, sign a white piece of paper with a black pen, photograph it, and upload the image. PDFWix Sign PDF removes the background automatically and places your handwritten signature on the PDF. Steps: sign on white paper, photograph in good lighting with your phone, upload to PDFWix Sign PDF, select Upload. This method is strongly recommended when sharing contracts with people who know your handwritten signature.

Under the US ESIGN Act, EU eIDAS and UK Electronic Communications Act 2000, all three methods produce a valid simple electronic signature. A simple e-signature is legally sufficient for employment contracts, NDAs, leases, purchase agreements and most commercial contracts. For land registry transfers, high-value securities transactions and some regulated financial instruments, an Advanced or Qualified Electronic Signature is required. Frequently asked questions

Which signature method looks most professional?
Uploading a photo of your actual handwritten signature looks most professional and authentic. Typing with a good handwriting font is the cleanest on digital screens. Drawing with a mouse tends to look less polished unless you use a stylus or touchscreen. Use whichever method your document's recipient is likely to find most credible.
Can I add my signature to a scanned PDF?
Yes. PDFWix Sign PDF works on any PDF including scanned image-based PDFs. Your signature is placed as a visual layer on top of the page content. Note that if the PDF is purely an image scan with no text layer, the fields are not interactive — position your signature visually where the signature line appears.
How do I sign multiple pages of a PDF?
In PDFWix Sign PDF, add your signature once then drag and position it anywhere on the current page. To place the same signature on multiple pages, add it page by page — click Add Signature again for each additional page where you need to sign. Each page can have independently positioned signatures.
