True redaction permanently removes the text data from a PDF — it is not a black box drawn over it. A black rectangle overlay can be removed in seconds in any PDF editor. Why a black box is not redaction

The most common redaction mistake is drawing a black rectangle over sensitive text in a PDF editor and assuming the text is hidden. It is not. A black rectangle is a visual overlay — a separate layer placed on top of the text. The underlying text remains fully intact in the PDF file. Anyone who opens the file in Adobe Acrobat, PDF-XChange, or any PDF editor can simply delete the black rectangle layer and read the text underneath instantly. This has caused numerous real-world data breaches, including court filings where attorneys blacked out witness names only to have journalists remove the box and publish the names.

What true redaction looks like

True redaction permanently removes the text data from the PDF and replaces the region with a solid colour that is part of the page content — not a separate layer. After true redaction, the text cannot be selected, copied, searched or recovered by any software. The black region is baked into the page itself. You can verify redaction worked by trying to click on the redacted text in any PDF viewer — if the text cannot be selected, the redaction is genuine.

How to redact a PDF properly using PDFWix

How can I tell if a PDF has been properly redacted or just has a black box overlay?

Try to click on the redacted area and drag to select text. If you can select text under the black region, the redaction is a black box overlay — not true redaction. If clicking produces no text selection cursor at all, the text has been permanently removed. You can also check in Adobe Acrobat's Content pane — improperly redacted text still shows in the content tree.

Can redacted text be recovered even after proper redaction?

No. True redaction permanently removes the text data from the PDF file structure. Unlike encryption (which can be decrypted with the right key), redaction is irreversible — the data no longer exists in the file. There is no forensic recovery possible from a properly redacted PDF.

Should I redact or password-protect sensitive documents?

Use redaction when you need to share a document with sensitive parts removed — the recipient sees the document with blanked-out sensitive sections. Use password protection when you want to restrict who can open the entire document. They serve different purposes: redaction removes data permanently, protection restricts access.
