JPG vs PNG vs WebP: which format should you use?
JPG is the universal photo format: every device, app and upload form opens it, and lossy compression keeps photos small — but it has no transparency and softens sharp text and line art. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, making it ideal for logos, screenshots, diagrams and anything with crisp edges, at the cost of much larger files for photos. WebP, developed by Google, does both: lossy or lossless compression, transparency, and files typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality. It is supported by all modern browsers, but some older software still refuses it. Rule of thumb: photos for sharing → JPG; graphics, screenshots and anything transparent → PNG; images for your own website → WebP.
