Why photos show up sideways
Cameras write the image sensor data in a fixed direction and add an EXIF Orientation tag saying how it should be turned for display. Gallery apps read that tag; many upload forms, older email clients, CMS editors and document tools ignore it or strip it, which is why the same picture can appear rotated. Rotating the actual pixels fixes the problem permanently. Mirroring (flipping horizontally) is a separate fix. Front-facing cameras often save a reversed image, so text on a T-shirt or sign reads backwards. A horizontal flip puts it the right way round. A vertical flip turns an image upside down along its horizontal axis — handy for reflections and design work.
