What converting JPG to PNG does (and doesn't) do
Converting to PNG freezes the image in a lossless format: from that point on you can edit and save it as many times as you like without the gradual degradation JPG suffers on every re-save. It also makes the file acceptable to tools and forms that require PNG. What it can't do is add back detail the JPG already threw away, or create a transparent background by itself — the white or coloured background in your photo stays. Because PNG is lossless, expect the file to be two to five times larger. If you only need a smaller photo, Compress Image is the better tool.
