Why a circle crop needs PNG
A circular picture is still stored as a rectangle — the corners outside the circle have to be something. JPG has no transparency, so those corners become solid white or black, which looks wrong on a dark-mode app or coloured slide. PNG supports an alpha channel, so the corners are saved as fully transparent pixels and the circle blends into whatever background it is placed on. Most platforms crop uploads into a circle themselves, but they do it from the centre with no zoom control. Cropping it yourself first lets you frame the face, add a coloured ring that matches your brand, and upload a file that already looks exactly how it will be displayed. For a square with soft corners — common for app icons and presentation headshots — use the Rounded square shape.

Tips for circle cropping
Start with a centred photo
The crop uses the centre square. If the face is off-centre, first use Crop Image to centre it.
Upload larger than needed
An 800×800 PNG stays sharp on high-resolution screens even if the site shows it at 200 px.
Keep PNG for transparency
Converting the result to JPG fills the corners with a solid colour. Keep the PNG.
Shrink for the web
Large transparent PNGs can be heavy — Compress Image converts them to WebP with transparency kept.
