Soft dark grey vs a full negative
A straight negative flips white to pure black and black to pure white. It works, but the very high contrast can be tiring, and photographs turn into unreadable negatives. The soft setting instead lands the page on a dark grey around #1e1e1e with text near #e6e6e6 — closer to the night themes used by e-readers and code editors, and much easier on the eyes over a long session. There is one honest trade-off. Because PDF colours live inside page drawing instructions, changing them means redrawing each page and saving it as a picture. That keeps the layout perfect but removes the text layer, so the dark copy cannot be searched or copied from, and its file size is usually larger.
